PLAYER UNIONS CHALLENGE FIFA OVER CLUB WORLD CUP EXPANSION

Legal Claim Lodged:
Player unions have taken legal action against Fifa regarding the expanded Club World Cup. They have hired a lawyer who previously won the Bosman ruling to represent them in the case at the European Court of Justice.

Challenge to Fifa's Decision:
England’s PFA and their French counterparts are contesting Fifa’s decision to increase the Club World Cup to a 32-team tournament that will take place every four years. The tournament is set to begin next summer in the US, overlapping with the usual time off for footballers.

Violation of Rights:
The player unions, supported by Fifpro Europe, argue that Fifa made the decision unilaterally without consulting the players. They claim that this move violates the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and could potentially breach EU competition law.
