Back in 2016, Valverde had a trial with the Premier League giant and came close to signing with them. However, he ultimately decided to sign with Real Madrid instead, leaving many wondering why.

Valverde explained that he chose not to join Arsenal because he never wanted to go to England in the first place. In his column for The Players Tribune, he shared, "If you Google me, you will see stories about how I almost went to Arsenal when I was 16. That is maybe half-true." Valverde clarified that it wasn't because he had anything against Arsenal, but rather, he had personal reasons for his decision.

The Business Side of Football

Valverde revealed that during that time, the business side of football took over. People around him were urging him to go to Arsenal, saying things like, "Who wouldn't want to go play for Arsenal? You want to stay here in Uruguay? That's crazy!" However, Valverde realized that their motivations were more about making money than his own well-being.

A Comfortable Environment

When Valverde went on trial in London for a week, he felt uncomfortable. He explained, "If you only think of material things, it sounds great. But we are not robots." At just 16 years old, he would have had to live alone in a foreign country, not speaking the language, without his family by his side. Valverde understood that while some kids succeed in moving overseas, there are many more who don't.

A Personal Decision

In the end, Valverde's decision to turn down Arsenal was a personal one. He prioritized his comfort, well-being, and the support of his family over the opportunity to play for a prestigious club. Valverde's story serves as a reminder that sometimes, personal factors play a significant role in making life decisions, even for professional athletes.
