MANCHESTER UNITED RUMORED TO SIGN SPORTING LISBON STAR INACIO
Background
Manchester United has been in search of a new defender for some time now. They had considered signing Axel Disasi and Jean-Clair Todibo during the summer transfer window, but ultimately decided to focus on other positions. This allowed Chelsea to secure Disasi in a €45m deal, while Todibo chose to stay at Nice. United's decision not to pursue these deals was contingent on their ability to offload Harry Maguire, who had fallen out of favor under manager Erik ten Hag.
Maguire's Resurgence
Despite talks of a possible move to West Ham, Maguire remained at United and has since regained his place in the starting lineup. He has impressed with improved performances and is now considered first-choice under Ten Hag.
Varane's Struggles
Raphael Varane, on the other hand, has had a less successful season. The 30-year-old has found himself on the bench and behind Maguire and Jonny Evans in the pecking order. Paul Scholes even suggested that Varane's "legs have gone." With rumors of a January exit, United is now actively pursuing a new defender.
Inacio as a Target
While United still has interest in Todibo, reports from Portugal suggest that they are more likely to pursue a move for Inacio. The 22-year-old Sporting Lisbon defender is highly regarded and has a €60m exit clause in his contract. Liverpool had also shown interest in Inacio but is now rumored to be closing in on the signing of Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly.
Payment Plan in Place
According to Portuguese media, United's incoming minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe already has a plan in place to bring Inacio to Old Trafford. Sources have leaked that United has put together a payment plan to secure the defender's signature in January. The club is reportedly not intimidated by the price tag and hopes to slightly restructure the deal to their advantage.
Negotiations and Relationship with Sporting CP
United is hopeful that they can quickly conclude the signing by leveraging their close relationship with Sporting CP. They signed Bruno Fernandes from the club in 2019 and had previously acquired Cristiano Ronaldo from them in 2003. The proposed deal would involve a guaranteed €45m fee, with an additional €15m in bonuses and add-ons.
Coach's Response and Ratcliffe's Plans
Sporting coach Ruben Amorim, who has also been linked to United as a potential replacement for Ten Hag, expressed his desire for the club to hold out for Inacio's full valuation. However, it is reported that the deal will proceed, making Inacio the first signing of the Ratcliffe era at United.
Ratcliffe is expected to take a more hands-on approach to the club's transfer dealings. He aims to follow the model of Liverpool and Arsenal by signing the best young talent and ensuring that player values do not decline over time, as has happened with Varane and Casemiro at United.
