Spanish Prosecutor Seeks Prison Terms for Football Fans in Hate Crime Case

Background
A Spanish prosecutor has requested four-year prison terms for four football fans who committed a hate crime. The incident occurred when they hung a black effigy dressed as Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior from a bridge in January. The fans are followers of Atlético Madrid and belong to a far-right radical group called Frente Atlético.

The Hate Crime
Before a match against rival Atlético Madrid on January 26, a banner reading "Madrid hates Real" and an inflatable black effigy dressed in Vinícius' No. 20 shirt were found hanging on a bridge near Real Madrid's training ground. The prosecutor accused the four fans of making threats against Vinícius and violating his fundamental rights.

Contempt and Repudiation
According to a statement from the prosecutor's office, the four fans displayed clear contempt and repudiation towards Vinícius because of his skin color. Their actions were intended to disturb and unsettle him.

Compensation
The prosecutor has also requested joint compensation of €6,000 ($6,490.20) to be paid to Vinícius as a form of moral damages caused by the incident.

Legal Measures
When the four men were arrested in May, they chose not to testify. As a result, they were released on bail but were prohibited from approaching Vinícius or communicating with him. They were also banned from entering Real Madrid's stadium and training ground, as well as Atlético Madrid's playing venue.

Past Incidents
Earlier this year, Vinícius Jr faced racial abuse from fans during a match in Valencia. He called out Spain's LaLiga and the country itself for being racist. The game was paused for 10 minutes as Vinícius pointed out the fans who were yelling insults at him. He was later sent off in the second half after getting into an altercation with some Valencia players.

Solidarity and Support
Since then, the sporting world has shown solidarity with Vinícius. The Brazilian government has also called for severe sanctions against those responsible for the racial slurs. In October, Vinícius testified as a witness in a court investigation against three fans who allegedly made racist gestures towards him during a match in Valencia. He was also called to testify in a similar case involving insults at the Mallorca stadium in February.
